Copycat Planet Hollywood's Captain Crunch Chicken is a true game-changer when it comes to coating chicken fingers and we've made it simple to recreate this popular menu item right in your own kitchen!

Back in the early 1990s when this debuted on the menu at Planet Hollywood we were a little skeptical to even try but being huge Slyvestore Stallone fans, we just had to take his word for it using a sweet coating on chicken no less being cereal than dipping in honey mustard but he was right, it was addicting and unforgettable.

Both my kids and myself were hooked and it took me several blunders to get the recipe right even trying the ones online but they were never quite right in taste or texture.

First of all yes, it was deep-fried in the restaurant but we've perfected a two other healthier version.

Then through trial and error to keep the coating on I hit the jackpot baking it and the rest is a delicious cereal coated chicken history we make often with no problem.

Baking these on an oil sprayed parchment paper still kept that delicious flavor, however, we have provided an air fried version and pan fried instructions for the original recipe method of cooking.

The honey mustard had to be made from scratch to get that whole experience because the store-bought ones just weren't that same taste we remembered.

Over the years after trial and error, the chicken comes out just the way we love the crunchy sweet and salty coated chicken and honey mustard recipe is super easy I promise.

Easy Steps to Making Captain Crunch Cereal Chicken

  • use only boneless chicken slice the chicken into strips like chicken fingers
  • preheat the oven to 400 degrees
  • set up cereal breading station with 3 pie plates
  • oil spray the parchment paper and line a baking sheet
  • dip the chicken in flour, egg then cereal spray with cooking oil
  • bake until the internal temperature is at 165 degrees using a meat thermometer in the thickest part, serve warm with honey mustard
  • Air Fry: preheat the air fryer for 4 minutes at 400 degrees. Brush the basket with cooking oil. Place in single file each chicken finger and air fry for 9 minutes flipping once at 4 minutes. Use the meat thermometer to check the internal temperature is at 165 degrees at the thickest part.
  • Pan Fried: heat around 2 inches of oil on medium heat. Place the chicken strips in the pan not crowding and fry them for 5 to 7 minutes flipping once.

Get these Ingredients(for exact measurements print off the recipe card below)

  • boneless chicken breasts cut into strips
  • flour
  • Captain Crunch cereal (put through a food processor with some chunks left) place the cereal in another pie plate
  • granulated garlic powder
  • black pepper
  • pinch of salt
  • vegetable oil and or cooking oil spray
  • eggs, water
  • tool needed parchment paper, fork, pie plates, and a baking sheet

Tips

  1. set up a breading cereal station in order of flour, egg, cereal
  2. use cooking oil on the parchment paper so these won't stick at all
  3. spray the tops of the coated chicken with cooking oil before baking
  4. use a fork to dip into flour, egg then cereal so it won't stick to your hands
  5. make sure to use a meat thermometer in the thickest part of the chicken it's completed cooking at 165 degrees
  6. always season the flour with salt and pepper
  7. preheat the oven to 400 degrees
  8. use my homemade honey mustard recipe it makes a world of difference compared to store-bought for dipping the chicken in

Not all honey mustard is created equal, the one we had and loved had a little heat to it.


The recipe for our homemade honey mustard in this recipe card has only 5 ingredients and it's a really close copycat, we never say it's perfect but it works perfectly for our taste!

Sweet and Crunchy Cereal Coated Chicken

This is the famous copycat for Captain Crunch Chicken found at Planet Hollywood Restaurants

Ingredients

  • 4 boneless chicken breasts cut into strips
  • 2 cups flour (place the flour in a shallow pie plate)
  • 2 eggs beaten with around 2 to 3 tablespoons of water (place in a shallow pie plate)
  • 4 cups of Captain Crunch cereal are put through a food processor with some chunks left (placed the cereal in another pie plate)
  • 2 teaspoons granulated garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • pinch of salt
  • cooking oil spray oil or use a brush to coat the chicken with vegetable oil and the baking sheet
  • parchment paper
  • Garnish: dipping sauce of choice preferred is honey mustard

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Put the cereal into a food processor leaving some chunks (not a fine powder)
  3. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spray it with cooking oil.
  4. Slice the chicken into strips around 1 inch wide and 4 to 5 inches long
  5. Set up a cereal breading station.
  6. Add the beaten eggs and water to one pie plate.
  7. In the second pie plate flour with salt and pepper and granulated garlic powder
  8. In the third pie plater crushed cereal
  9. Dip the chicken first in flour, then in egg then into cereal until all of it is coated.
  10. Place all the strips on the baking sheet.
  11. If you have any more cereal leftover just sprinkle it all over the chicken.
  12. Spray the tops with cooking oil.
  13. Bake in 400 degrees preheated oven until the chicken is cooked or a meat thermometer reads the internal temperature of 165 degrees.
  14. This usually is done in 25 minutes depending on thickness.
  15. Serve warm with honey mustard.
  16. Homemade Honey Mustard Recipe:
  17. 1/4 cup honey
  18. 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  19. 1/4 cup Dijon mustard
  20. 1 tablespoon white distilled vinegar
  21. 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  22. Whisk all these ingredients in the bowl until smooth.
