Fresh Peach Turnovers (handpies)

We called them turnovers, mom use to add glaze to some of them, dad liked them plain just as shown. I now read that these are called handpies these days or maybe always were for some of you. Whatever their name the pastry is soft, sweet and delicious. They last longer refrigerated if you have leftovers.. Any kind of fruit will do, but peaches are my favorite and taste great warm or cold! Enjoy!

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons sugar
5 tablespoons butter, or margarine softened
3/4 cups half and half
Two or three fresh peaches chopped in small chunks
peach or apricot preserves

Stir together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Using a pastry blender,or heavy duty mixer cut in the butter and mix till crumbly. Add rest of ingredients and stir by hand to moisten the dough. .

Press the dough out on floured board and with a floured palm of your hand press the dough to form a circle. Add chopped fruit, add a tablespoon of preserves on top.
Fold over and press firmly with the tines of a floured fork seal them tightly. Brush with beaten egg yolk.. Place on parchment paper and bake at 400 till brown. . Bake for 15 to 20 minutes.    Let the turnovers cool slightly. Serve with french vanilla ice cream or plain... They are great lunch box treats!

These look yummy. I should make these as they would be better for the 2 of us than a pie. We wouldn't end up throwing 1/2 of it out.

My one year old peach tree (one of t wo in front yard) had so many peaches on the branches that they were almost touching the ground. They were smallish but beautifully coloured. I baked a peach pie. I have these two firm plastic sheets and roll out the dough between them, and it's easy to separate.

But my reason for writing was re the sausage and peppers. Thought you lived upstate when you mentioned Utica. My daughter & her spouse just moved to Indian Rocks Beach, Pinellas county. When I lived in La. there were Publix supermkts, and they baked baguettes which were very good. A similar bread was used by us yesterday for the sausage & peppers. I start them in water, covered, then remove cover and fry them. French bread in New Orleans is great. Big pity re onion allergy. No onion soup, etc, onions are indispensible to me, use couple lbs a week.
Sorry to ramble, but try the publix bread and see if you like it, I assume all stores have the same formula.
You can delete this...
p.s. I was so excited to see your sausage pepper post. Thank You.

Peach is one of the things I have never made a big pie with, perhaps I feel that it just is too much. Now these hand pies I can really get into. The picture is so tempting. It would be hard to wait for these to cool from the oven-yum!
