Christmas Jello Cake

Christmas Jello Cake is a blast from the past fun cake treat from the 1960s and perfect when changing out the colors to match any holiday

We've adapted our cake colors for Easter, Halloween, St. Patrick's Day, and Patriotic colors to match our party's theme and for adult parties, we've even added little spirits to the water for an adult jello shot-style cake!

This is the best cake all summer long just changing up the colors to match your party theme of maybe you're celebrating Christmas in July it's a freshing pretty festive dessert!

The cake stays moist with the jello injection of colorful flavor and is so pretty that it is certainly a showstopper for any party you host or holiday gathering.

Easy Step for Making Jello Poke Cakes or Jello Shot Cakes

  1. bake the cake
  2. make the jello mixture
  3. poke holes in the cake and add the jello
  4. make a whipped topping frosting
  5. assemble
  6. keep chilled before serving

Shopping List for Jello Cakes

  • use a yellow cake mix or see below for a scratch cake recipe
  • strawberry Jell-O gelatin dessert ( or use another flavor or brand preferred) 
  • boiling water 
  •  if the adult cake is being made you will need either, Vodka, Coconut Rum, or your favorite liqueur 
  •  Frosting for the Top: 
  • instant vanilla pudding milk 
  • vanilla whipped topping 
  • food coloring of choice (shown is green

Baking Pan You Can Use for Jello Cake

  1. 13 x 9 sheet pan
  2. two-layer cake dividing the liquid
  3. character pans or other shaped pans IE hearts, round, square
  4. cupcakes (a little more work but so pretty!)

Jello Colors To Choose

  • orange and lemon for Halloween
  • red cherry, strawberry, raspberry, and lime green for Christmas
  • blue raspberry and green apple for Easter
  • any red jello, blue jello leaving the cake white for Patriotic colors

This cake is perfect for a holiday, birthdays, or any picnic event.


You can easily transform the colors to match your party theme by using jello and food coloring.


The cake is made from scratch but if you want to save time just use a yellow cake mix.

Christmas Jello Cake

Christmas Jello Cake

This is a vintage recipe from the 1960s to make any holiday using a cake that is poked filled with jello and topped with a creamy frosting.
Prep time: 10 MinCook time: 25 MinTotal time: 35 Min

Ingredients

  • (You can use any brand of yellow cake mix if you're in a hurry!)
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 eggs
  • green food color
  • Jello Filling:
  • 1 (3 ounces) package of strawberry Jell-O gelatin dessert ( or use another flavor or brand preferred)
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup of cold water (use Rum, Vodka, Coconut Rum or your favorite liqueur for an adult cake)
  • Frosting for the Top:
  • 1 (3 1/2 ounce) package of instant vanilla pudding
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 8 ounces of whipped topping
  • The food coloring of choice (shown is red (pink)

Instructions

  1. Homemade Cake Recipe Instructions:
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  3. Grease and flour one 9x13-inch pan.
  4. Mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt; set aside.
  5. In a large bowl, cream sugar and shortening until light and fluffy.
  6. Add eggs one at a time, beating thoroughly after each addition. Add flour mixture alternately with milk, beating just to combine. finally, stir in vanilla.
  7. Take 1 cup of batter and add green food coloring to it.
  8. Pour the rest of the batter into the prepared greased and floured pan then pour the green batter on top.
  9. Bake at 350 degrees using the toothpick method to ensure it's completely cooked for around 25 to 30 minutes.
  10. Note: Bake cake according to package directions if using a mix.
  11. Jello Mixture:
  12. Dissolve Jello in 1 cup of boiling water and 1/2 cup of cold water or liqueur for the adult version.
  13. Let the cake and Jello cool.
  14. Prick cake all over with a fork.
  15. Pour the Jello mixture over the cake; refrigerate for 1 hour.
  16. Topping:
  17. Beat pudding and milk.
  18. Add vanilla and food coloring.
  19. Fold in whipped topping.
  20. Spread on the cake and chill.
  21. Optional: Fresh Strawberries cleaned, sliced when in season, or use frozen, and one bottle of strawberry ice cream syrup.
  22. Other jello package suggestion combinations: orange jello and vodka, pineapple jello and coconut rum, and lemon jello with limoncello, using other extracts and flavorings and they all are wonderful.
  23. Use whatever combo you like!

  17. Never underestimate the power of JELLO!...awesome cake, I never tired of making all kinds of Jello desserts in the seventies and eighties, and my children loved them. Now, my little grandchildren think it's some kind of "foreign object" from Mars!
